day 154: Painted kitchen cabinetry
One of the biggest investments one can make in the home is the kitchen—which makes total sense as it’s the heart of the home. But what if you dislike your cabinets? Buying new cabinetry is not budget friendly and in today’s market, not a rapid process. So the next option is paint! You can hire someone or DIY, but either way, painting is one of the easiest ways to completely transform your kitchen. In the kitchen below, we painted the existing island cabinets Benjamin Moore Jamestown Blue.
Painting cabinetry may seem like an overwhelming endeavor. If you tackle this yourself, first you’ll need to remove the cabinet faces and hardware. And all surfaces will need to be thoroughly cleaned to remove any lingering kitchen oils and grease. Fortunately, our professionals tackle these chores with ease, as seen in one of our recent projects. These cabinets were painted Benjamin Moore Blue Note.
The rest of this project should be fun! Have you envisioned brightening up your kitchen with white cabinetry? Or do you prefer the sleek and lush look of a darker, even black paint? We at MJG Interiors LOVE pops of color. Painting your kitchen island or a section of cabinetry can add a touch of dimension and style, without overwhelming your entire space. Below we painted the island Benjamin Moore Whipple Blue. For the upper perimeter cabinets, we painted the insides Benjamin Moore Smoldering Red and kept the outside of these cabinets natural wood.
If you don’t have an island (or like it the way it is), another way to add a subtle dash of color is painting the inside of your cabinets. For this client, we added Benjamin Moore Smoldering Red inside their rustic wood cabinets. Note: Remember this technique only works if your cabinet faces are glass, or in the case below, chicken wire.
Do you have a small kitchenette that needs a refresh? We were fortunate to have a client that wanted their barn updated! (One of our dream projects!) As you can see below, this was a small space, so we whitened up the walls with Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and only painted the lower cabinets a dark, moody blue, (Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue) allowing them to stand out. We eliminated the uppers, choosing open shelves instead to increase the visual space of the room.
But if you’re an adventurist, and want to dramatically transform your kitchen, go for it! As mentioned, we embrace color and bold is IN. These cabinets were stained a custom mix with a chocolate glaze! Pro tip: Notice how the cabinetry color is repeated in the furniture to the right. Make sure you pick a color that will coordinate with the rest of your home, i.e. warm colors look best when paired next to cool ones. Want more design help?
